AmGallery: Tell us about your response to Alexia’s piece.
MP: I was inter­ested in the trees in Alexia’s ani­ma­tion of Adam and Eve. In Chris Marker’s La Jetee, there’s a funny scene where the pro­ta­gan­ist points to the trees explain­ing that this is where he came from. I decided to take this as my start­ing point for a work ‘point­ing to the trees’. An image of trees revealed itself in a 1969 copy of Devon Life stashed under my desk. I live in Devon. This is where I came from (points to trees). A selec­tion of images were cut out with kitchen scis­sors and trimmed with a guil­lo­tine. Through a process of arrange­ment and rearrange­ment the sequence was reduced to 9 images. This process is an ongo­ing, scrapbook-like activ­ity. Often pic­tures find their way into a rub­bishy pho­to­copied book-work and this may be so with this arrange­ment titled ‘Mrs Tibby Points to the Trees’. I like the method­i­cal process of scan­ning, edit­ing and fil­ing images on the com­puter and then arrang­ing them on the page both online and offline; in this case, stretched, hap­haz­ardly on an online page.
