AG: Tell us about your response to the chain
JH: The Images I have produced for the Chain Chapter 11 form a photographic timeline of all am gallery‘s archived posts for the digital Chain.I focussed a digital camera on a computer screen whilst scrolling through previous artist responses. The resulting images show broken links, layering of text and digital glitches that combine to create a new piece of work from me by digitally appropiating and re-mixing the imagery that other artist have produced.

The Digital Chain} Week 10

November 6th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

This week’s AmGallery response was created by participants at the AmGallery Autumn Social. Maddy Pethick’s work ‘points to the trees’ was displayed during the event.

The group recreated different parts of Maddy’s piece on grey paper. Here are some of the results…

AmGallery: Tell us about your response to Alexia’s piece.
MP: I was interested in the trees in Alexia’s animation of Adam and Eve. In Chris Marker’s La Jetee, there’s a funny scene where the protaganist points to the trees explaining that this is where he came from. I decided to take this as my starting point for a work ‘pointing to the trees’. An image of trees revealed itself in a 1969 copy of Devon Life stashed under my desk. I live in Devon. This is where I came from (points to trees). A selection of images were cut out with kitchen scissors and trimmed with a guillotine. Through a process of arrangement and rearrangement the sequence was reduced to 9 images. This process is an ongoing, scrapbook-like activity. Often pictures find their way into a rubbishy photocopied book-work and this may be so with this arrangement titled ‘Mrs Tibby Points to the Trees’. I like the methodical process of scanning, editing and filing images on the computer and then arranging them on the page both online and offline; in this case, stretched, haphazardly on an online page.
